English

Equipment for English: an exercise book, an A4 envelope file, A4 paper, a vocabulary book and a dictionary.

Homework:

Usually year 7 receives two to three homework tasks per week covering the three strands of the curriculum. Homework must be recorded in your diary.

Assessment:

Work done in class, both written and spoken, is assessed continuously throughout the year. The teachers will comment on your progress, but you too will be asked to comment and assess your own work and that of others.

Books are assessed on a regular basis and specific homework tasks recorded in the diary are returned to students within a fortnight. Speaking and listening exercises are recorded on a sheet kept in the student’s folder. Shorter tasks may be given a tick mark. At least one homework per week is marked using the National Curriculum grid found on the back

Reading:

You will be expected to read widely throughout the year. You will be guided in your choice of material by your teacher and a reading list. The grade for reading is based on the national curriculum grid found on the back of the page. In order to ensure that you are reading there are a series of book reviews assigned to each year group throughout the year.

Speaking and Listening:

These activities are linked to the text (story) and scheme of work you are studying. Each half-term you are assessed for speaking and listening, reading and writing. Oral tasks take the forms of individual talks, group and class discussions and drama activities. Listening is also part of the grade. A full description of the grading criteria is found on the back of this sheet.

Writing:

Learning to express yourself in writing is an important part of the English curriculum. Throughout KS3, you will practise a variety of styles of writing, both fiction and non-fiction.
