At St. Martha’s, all the girls have the opportunity to cook throughout their time at the school. Food Technology is taught by subject specialists at KS3 from year 7 to 9. By the end of year 9 the girls have a good understanding of the importance of nutrition and are able to make sensible food choices.
Once they have developed their skills and interest in the subject they can continue at GCSE with the option of studying further AQA Home Economics - Food & Nutrition.
There are further opportunities still to cook in the Sixth Form with our popular enrichment programme that includes the Leith's Cookery Skills Course where the girls achieve a recognised certificate in basic cooking skills from Leith’s famous school of food and wine. This results in a prestige Sixth Form event called 'A Meal To Impress', where the girls hold a dinner party by invitation only.
The course also contributes towards the skills for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
Our main extra curricular event is the Inter House Young Chef Competition. The finalists are judged critically by outside judges; one an ex-pupil, Tonia Buxton celebrity chef of My Greek Kitchen.
This subject forms a very important part of the school curriculum for all the pupils as we try to develop their awareness of how important sharing; serving; working together and enjoying good food is in our society. Our motto based on St. Martha, is to Serve the Lord with Joy, which is apparent in the cookery room where pupils can learn to prepare a healthy dish for themselves and to share with others.
St Martha is the Patron St. of cooks and so we feel this is a very important area in our school.
